Are women any good at playing blackjack? Yes! While rich and famous male professional blackjack players seem to be the epitome of blackjack “rock stars”, women professional blackjack players may seem to be regular women with day jobs and a family to take care of.
Eleanor Dumont was the first ever professional blackjack player. A French by birth, she moved to California in 1854, then opened “Twenty-One” Casino. Gentle and refined, Madame Dumont dealt cards and almost always won. She served champagne to blackjack players and charmed them with her graceful manners. From Nevada, she moved her casino in places such as Fort Benton, Montana; Brodie, California; and Salmon, Idaho. Madame Dumont was nominated to the Blackjack Hall of Fame in 2006.
Alice Walker is a professional blackjack player who was one of the 40 finalists in the 2007 World Series of Blackjack. The 40 finalists were mostly men, but Ms. Walker simply managed to beat them all to claim the trophy and a pot prize of $500,000. The year before winning the blackjack World Series, Walker won the National 3-Card Poker Championship. Winning the back-to-back double crown was not an easy feat, making her one of the top card players worldwide.
Cathy Hulbert or Cat as she is fondly called by family and friends is a bona fide New Yorker. As a young college student, she opted to play cards as a means to pay for her education. It was in 1976, at age 24, when she decided to pack her bags and haul herself out to Las Vegas to become a professional poker player. As fate would have it, Hulbert became a blackjack dealer, met a man who introduced her to card counting, and the rest is history in the world of blackjack. After her stint as a first class blackjack player, Cathy Hulbert is back to playing her first love – poker.
Erica Schoenberg was a professional model, fitness trainer and volleyball player. In the world of blackjack, she is a most respected member of the MIT Blackjack Team. Her popularity zoomed up as people watch her incredible skills at the World Series of Poker and World Series of Blackjack. She has placed in the No Limit Texas Poker of $1,500 and No Limit Texas Hold’em of $2,500. She has participated in the World Series of Blackjack and in the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. At only 38 years old, Erica is now a full time gambler and engaged to co-player David Benyamine.
Angie Hardy is a single mother who was compelled to play blackjack in order to support her family. Called “mother lioness” by her colleagues, Hardy’ style in playing is quite aggressive, equipping her to play against some of the toughest male, professional blackjack players. Her determination and ambition pushed to strive in playing the game –ultimately qualifying to some of the world’s prestigious blackjack tournaments.
Monica Reeves is a Canadian blackjack player. She started playing the game in 2005 while under the tutelage of Krazy Kanuck, an online poker player pro whose real name is James Worth. Reeves took it to heart to learn the game. For nine months she trained hard to make her debut blackjack and poker tournaments. People took notice of her skills as a professional gambler. Before long she joined the Ultimate Blackjack Tournament, taking the silver trophy in the ladies event.
