Surely the odds are not always pro house since there are winners. Some win a round due to pure luck while there are those smart players who do win because they made an effort to “study” what makes blackjack tick!

What are some of the facts of Blackjack odds in connection with standard Blackjack rules?

The house advantage or edge is linked to the practice that the dealer’s hand is the last one played. Players that exceed 21 immediately lose. When the dealer presents his hand and goes over 21, then the players that didn’t bust wins the round. Profit is made by the casino to those who immediately lost even if the dealer consequently loses. However, there is a Blackjack regulation that says a dealer wins the bets of all players that lost or busts even if the dealers hand lost too. So, no matter how favorable the blackjack rules are, this aspect always makes the house at an advantage.

It is likely that a player who stands on 17 or more and hits on 16 or less will go over 21 at twenty nine percent, so will the dealer. The odds seem even this way. But, with the Blackjack rule that says a dealer gets the stakes of all players who got busted if the dealer has busted himself, the house edge is still about 8%. Nevertheless a 3:2 payment when a player gets a blackjack lowers the house edge to 6%.

Favorable Rules

In Blackjack games with really favorable rules, a player who employs perfect basic strategies will most likely lower the house edge to 0.5%. These favorable rules are found in a 6-deck game:

The goal of every Blackjack player is to do away with negative variations because these add up to the casino’s house edge. So avoiding dealer hits soft 17 and natural pay 6:5 are definitely unfavorable to players. Adding or subtracting the values of the variant to 0.5% (baseline edge) will give the value of the house edge against a player. How is this?

Let’s say a player finds a 6-deck game where he can only double down on a two card count of 10 or 11 and in which a dealer hits a soft 17. This particular game has a baseline house of 0.50% plus a 0.20% (soft 17 hit for dealer) plus a 0.22% (double down on 10/11 only), then the house edge against player is 0.92%.

As a rule, a Blackjack player must look for games that will give him the best odds.

Not all casinos offer blackjack versions wherein “surrender” is offered. This is an option wherein a player is allowed to give up half the amount of his bet instead of playing out a seemingly hopeless hand deal that is sure to lose.

A player immediately forfeits his hand and gets 50% of his bet returned to him. Let’s say a player bets $100 and was dealt a 16 while the dealer has a 10. It is wise to consider surrendering the hand and getting $50 back instead of continuing to play out the dealt hand which is most likely to lose the player $100. This option is only allowed on the first two cards before a player takes a hit.

Blackjack surrender is an excellent and winning move when done in the right circumstance. However, the majority of blackjack players do not known when to surrender and when not to.

Blackjack Early Surrender

The two types of blackjack surrenders are early surrender and late surrender. In early surrender, a player surrenders his hand right after being dealt his cards and before the dealer looks at his own card to check if he has a natural blackjack. This option is advantageous as it gives the player the option to surrender no matter what hand the dealer has. However, this form of blackjack surrender is not readily offered in casinos as it lowers the house edge over the players. Casinos that do offer early surrender adopt different rules to recoup the lost house edge.

It is best to opt for early surrender when:

• Dealer has an Ace and player has a hard 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17
• Dealer has a 10-valued card and player has a hard 14, 15, 16 or a pair of 7’s or 8’s
• Dealer has an Ace and player has a pair of 3’s, 6’s, 7’s or 8’s
• Dealer shows a soft 17 in a two-deck game and player has a pair of 2’s.

In a single deck blackjack, a player should not surrender a 10-valued card if the dealer has 5 and 9 or 4 and 10. He should not surrender a 10-value card in a two-deck blackjack if the dealer shows 4 and 10.

Blackjack Late Surrender

In blackjack late surrender, a player may forfeit half of his original bet only after the dealer has checked his hand and did not get a natural blackjack. In case the dealer gets a natural blackjack, the player will not be allowed to surrender and consequently lose his entire original bet. Late surrender is allowed in most casinos as this does not lower the house edge. However, players must ask dealers if late surrender is allowed on the table as this option is not always announced.

It is best to opt for late surrender when:

• Dealer has an Ace or 10-valued card and player has a hand total of 15
• Dealer has an Ace or 10-valued card and player has a hand total of 16 including a pair of 8’s
• Dealer has an Ace and player has a hand total of 17

A player must not opt for late surrender when:

• a dealer stands on soft 17 in a single deck blackjack
• if the dealer has an Ace, 9 or 10 and the player has a total hand of 15
• if a dealer has a 9 and the player has hand of 16

Opting for blackjack surrender may seem like a sucker move. But when the bet is high and the chance of losing is high, it is better to lose half the bet than all of it.

Simply put, house edge means the percentage of a player’s bet that the casino gets as profit on average. The size of the house edge dictates how much a player will get in a winning hand. Instead of winning 100% of his bet, the house edge is deducted.

For example, if the house edge is 2.5%, the casino gets that percent for every winning hand that the player gets. So instead of winning 100% of his bet, he only gets 97.5%. Thus, on average, a player loses 2.5% for every $100 bet he makes. Emphasis on “average” as one player may bet $100 and lose all of it while another bets $100 and wins $200 on top of his original bet.

Seasoned blackjack players look for blackjack variants with the lowest house edge so he can win the most or lose the least, depending on the outcome of his hand.

Low House Edge

Blackjack has the lowest house edge among casino games as this game is not won purely on luck but involves skills and application of strategies. The rule of thumb in blackjack house edge is that the fewer cards that are used, the lower the house edge. Thus, a single deck of blackjack game will have a lower payout for a natural “blackjack” to provide the casino some edge over the winning player.
